How to Discover Your Skin Type

How to Discover Your Skin Type

Do you know what your skin type is and what products you should be using? If you don’t, you could be doing a disservice to your skin. There are 3 different skin types: dry, oily, and normal/combination. To see a positive change in your skin, discover your skin type and choose the right products for you.

Finding Your Skin Type

To know which skin type you have, you need a blotting paper and about five minutes of your time. On bare skin, take a blotting paper and press it against your forehead. Hold the paper to the light and examine how much oil is on the paper. Take separate blotting papers to press on different areas of your face.

You may notice that all the blotting papers come back with oil on them. This means your skin type is oily.

If your blotting papers come back completely dry, this means your skin type is dry.

Now, you may notice that some blotting papers come back oily while others are dry. It’s common for the T-zone to be oilier than the rest of the face. This means you have normal/combination skin.

What Skincare Products Are Right for My Skin Type?

Products that are meant for oily skin will be too stripping for dry skin. Products that are meant for dry skin will contribute to extra greasiness on oily skin. It’s crucial you pick the right products for your skin type.

Dry Skin

For this skin type, hydration is key. Make sure you’re drinking ample amounts of water each day and not over-cleansing. Often, those with dry skin only need to cleanse their skin at night. In the morning, simply rinse with water.
Opt for skincare that contains hyaluronic acid as this ingredient absorbs moisture from the air into your skin. Gentle, regular exfoliation is also crucial to remove the dry, dead skin cells.

Oily Skin

Although your inclination may be to use intense cleansers and ingredients to soak up the oil, be conscious of doing too much. Over-cleansing will cause the skin to create extra sebum and become even more oily.

Look for products that are water-based, not oil-based. For moisturizers, that means choosing the gel formula over the lotion formula. If you suffer from acne, look for exfoliation products with anti-bacterial ingredients, like salicylic acid.

Normal/Combination Skin

If you have areas of dryness and areas of oiliness, you need a gentle, balancing skincare routine.

Opt for gel-based moisturizers and a gentle exfoliant. Then, use a serum that is designed for dry skin just on those areas.

Each of these skin types could experience sensitivity to certain products. Always test new skincare products on your inner wrist before experimenting on your face. If something irritates your skin, discontinue use and find a gentler product.
